The Vercors is a real playground perfectly suited to the discovery of these two sports practices. The via corda is a subtle combination of via ferrata and climbing, and so is fairly accessible. You don't need to be an excellent climber to discover this nature sport. Spice up you stay by discovering this activity with your family, friends or a working seminar.

Potholing is part of the Vercors' historical heritage with sites for exploration and discovery

The wide variety of sites and their density (over 3,000 known sites) make the Vercors a major destination, from many viewpoints. But potholing in the Vercors is also a human adventure: from the major explorers (potholers, speleologists) via scientists, up to the numerous professionals that manage this activity today. The adventure continues, as new cavities are discovered each year! This fascinating environment is now at your fingertips! Accompanied by a guide, you can discover a titanic natural work made of underground rivers and chasms.

A bit of history

The first discoveries took place at the end of the 19th century under Edouard Alfred Martel. Followed by Oscar Decombaz, who brought together a team of adventurers and explored the main underground phenomena in the Vercors. From 1936, André Bourgin pushed the explorations even further and documented the first scientific research. The 1950s saw the major explorations structured by the historical clubs, notably the Gouffre Berger. Improvements to techniques and equipment accelerated the exploration of the major vertical caves in the 1960s. From the 1980s, through systematic prospections, the karst basins are explored and each club works on a relatively defined sector. The exploration continues everywhere with the introduction of diving. In 2010, the major South Vercors network - the Scialet des Chuas - was discovered, marking the last major discovery.

Canyoning in the Vercors

The water has sculpted numerous gorges and canyons with varying difficulties in magnificent sites. Canyoning is a subtle mix of mountain sports, calling on climbing, potholing and white water sports techniques... You advance by alternating jumps into deep pools, abseiling descents down waterfalls and slides down natural toboggans, all in a preserved mineral and plant environment.

Mountain biking

The history of mountain biking was written and continues to be written in the Vercors...

It began in 1987 with the organisation of the 1st World Mountain Bike championships, and continues today with the Velo Vert Festival, and the organisation of the 1st French Electric Mountain Bike Championships in 2018. With its five Fédération Française de Cyclisme or Cyclotourisme labelled sites and over 1,500 km of signalled trails, its major long distance (GTV) and Chemins du Soleil (Grenoble-Sisteron) itineraries, its endurance and downhill mountain biking areas (Bike Resort) and its dedicated Fat Bike itineraries, the Vercors is a fabulous region for mountain biking whatever your level!

The Via Vercors

1st green path in the mountains

The ViaVercors, an itinerary dedicated to "green modes" of transport, including the bicycle, will take you to the heart of the Vercors, from village to village. Over 40 km link the villages of St Nizier du Moucherotte, Lans en Vercors, Villard de Lans, Corrençon en Vercors, Autrans and Méaudre. This secured path, accessible to a very wide public (inhabitants, tourists, families, sports people or people with reduced mobility), is ideal for discovering nature, the countryside and the heritage thanks to its signposting. You will find 7 electric bicycle recharging terminals along the itinerary.

Les évènements VTT du Vercors

Raid VTT Chemins du Soleil

Un Raid destiné à promouvoir l'itinéraire permanent des Chemins du Soleil entre Grenoble et Sisteron et entre Valence et gap. Les départs et arrivées changent chaque année. Ce raid considéré comme extrême du fait d'un dénivelé important (+de 7500m) permet de relier Valence et Gap. Plusieurs formules sont proposés, rando en plusieurs jours, élite en 2 jours avec étape de nuit ou en mode rando sans chrono sur 3 étapes. Un évènement de début juin, à destination des VTTistes confirmés !

A bit of history

The Vercors has long been renowned for its limestone cliffs, with names that have marked the history of the mountains (the mont Aiguille, the Gerbier, Archiane, Presles...). Climbing in the Vercors is almost second nature! It all really started after the war, when Félix GERMAIN published his 1947 guidebook listing all the routes in the Pre-Alps. The person who made climbing in the Vercors famous was Serge COUPÉ, the most prolific climber of that period: From the Mont Aiguille, where he overcame the South-East face (1951), and the South pillar (1952), via the rochers du parquet (1953). In May 1960, COUPÉ overcame two of the largest Pre-Alpine problems of the time: the East face of the Gerbier, which was finally climbed directly via the famous rainbow gap, whilst René CLEMENT and André GAUCI climbed the left pillar in September. And with the same climbers, COUPÉ opened the Spigolo Sud-Est of the Deux Soeurs the same year. This was the golden age for the Vercors, which attracted mountaineers from far and wide. The major mountaineering and climbing experts came to show off their skills thus reinforcing the Vercors' fame even more. However, by the 1960s and 1970s, almost all the unclimbed faces ten years previously had been opened. It was the end of the golden age and both local and foreign climbers turned to the Presles cliffs. Then they moved onto free climbing - the Gerbier sector saw the opening of a number of impressive free climbing routes that have been taken up today. A new generation continued the tradition, and the sites became more accessible with the opening of climbing schools in the 1990s.

Vertical environment

Plant life in the cliffs has to face numerous difficulties: considerable temperature amplitudes, absence of soil, wind, drought... The plants meet these constraints by attaching themselves solidly and reducing their surface areas in contact with the air, to avoid losing water and drying out. The species have long roots and cushion-type shapes. Dead trees do not rot in the dry environment. You can see impressive specimens that have reached a respectable age in difficult living conditions. Not many mammals can be found in this vertical environment, but you can find hoofed animals. The chamois is the most widespread, although it is not specifically a rock-climber. At ease in the forest, chased by man, it has found refuge in the mountains and can be seen on the ledges. The chamois create and maintain the paths at the base of the cliffs. The ibex is a better climber, with its rigid hooves that help it grip on the stone slabs. Vertigo is simply not in its vocabulary.

The masters of the airs are of course the birds. There are a number of species that live only in the vertical rock environment, at different altitudes, such as the Alpine Swift which can also be found around the Mediterranean shore. There are also other species that can live elsewhere, such as the Common Kestrel, which nests in the lowland trees. It is difficult to summarize all the bird species that you can meet when you climb, but the most visible are the Wall creeper and birds of prey, which are rare, and so must be protected (peregrine falcon, golden eagle, eagle owl).
