A strategic natural treasure

The Jarjatte valley is the only one in the Drôme region to have an alpine level! At the crossroads of Alpine and Provençal influences, edelweiss grows alongside thyme. It is classified as a natural site for the uniqueness of its sharp peaks, with their dolomite accents emerging from the forests.

This Natura 2000 site protects: the southernmost permafrost with arctic vegetation at only 1,500 meters above sea level; the astonishing Lac du Lauzon, unique in its limestone environment; Rocher Rond, the highest peak in the Drôme at 2,453 meters; the rare braided Buëch River; an enigmatic stand of century-old pines; and a remarkable flora comprising 908 species, 43 of which exist only here in the Drôme.

A paradise for experienced hikers

The sure-footed hiker can tackle the ten highest peaks in the Drôme, all exceeding 2,000 meters. An exclusive adventure in these limestone massifs, you can climb to the only high-altitude lake in Lauzon! After a steep climb, and even if it remains modest, it's an oasis in the heart of the rocks in these austere landscapes... Experienced mountaineers can continue their more technical, off-trail hikes to Rocher Rond or Grand Ferrand... Pastoralism has retained all its strength here, as evidenced by the flocks of sheep that, from June to mid-October, reach the high-altitude sheepfolds accompanied by their guard dogs. This summer presence means that other dogs, even on leashes, are prohibited from certain mountain pastures (information at the Tourist Office).

Jarjatte @V. Giry

A village resort in a wild valley

La Jarjatte is home to a small family ski resort, hidden away in the middle of its beech and fir forest, and discreet outdoor sports facilities: climbing school, via ferrata, treetop adventure course, orienteering course... With the jagged peaks of the Col des Aiguilles as a backdrop, the hamlet of La Jarjatte, with its Dauphiné-style buildings, has preserved its original architecture, recalling the ruggedness of the area. At the bottom of the valley, in the Nordic ski area, the Granges des Forêts overlook the fascinating jagged peaks that serve as their backdrop. In winter, their charm is well worth it, as they are only accessible by cross-country skiing or on foot...
